New Drug Shows Promise for Stubborn High Blood Pressure and Kidney Disease

A new medication, baxdrostat, is offering hope for individuals with hard-to-treat high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease. Preliminary research suggests this novel pill could be a game-changer where other treatments have failed.

Baxdrostat works by inhibiting the production of aldosterone, a hormone that can drive up blood pressure. In a recent clinical trial, patients taking baxdrostat in addition to their standard medications saw a significant reduction in their systolic blood pressure—on average, an 8.1 mm Hg greater drop than those who received a placebo.

Beyond its impact on blood pressure, baxdrostat has shown potential benefits for kidney health. The study found that patients taking the drug had a 55% lower level of urine albumin, a key indicator of kidney damage, compared to the placebo group. This suggests that baxdrostat may help to slow the progression of kidney disease.

Currently, baxdrostat is in late-stage clinical trials to further test its effectiveness and safety. It has not yet been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, these early results are a promising development for the millions of people affected by treatment-resistant hypertension and chronic kidney disease.
